Reconnecting with Nature

Remember fishing as a kid? How great it was to spend time with your dad, mom or a special grown-up?

Ryan Newman still remembers spending sleepy summer mornings and cool evenings fishing with his granddad. In the same way, you can give your kids a good time today—and memories that last forever—by heading outside and enjoying our national heritage.

Across the country, parents are focusing on reconnecting their children with nature. From TV to computer games, there is plenty of indoor playtime today. But nature’s show is better than anything you can find on a screen. So plug your kids into a bigger world—and good fishing!

Tips for Fishing with your Kids

Fishing is fun! Here’s how to make your time on the water even better:

Start with the right bait. Worms win, but plastic worms or metal lures (avoid lead) work too!

  • Look for fish around rocks, weeds and pilings. They prefer the shade and cover.
  • The best fishing is usually in the early morning and late evening—at sunrise or sunset.
  • Bring some extras: Snacks, drinks, sunscreen, bug spray—and life jackets for kids.
